LE CASTAGNE DI GERFALCO/CHESTNUTS FROM GERFALCO

Periodo di castagne e di funghi e il mio babbo parte ogni giorno per Gerfalco, un piccolo paesino sulle montagne grossetane nel comune di Montieri. Da piccola ci andavo spesso con la mia famiglia: partenza alle 7:00, due ore di curve e tornanti e passeggiata nei boschi a far castagne. Che meraviglia di colori!Che silenzio!Che profumo di bosco!... e che male quelle spine di riccio nelle dita: mi ero di nuovo dimenticata i guanti! Beh, però quando poi la sera nonno faceva le sue mitiche 'bruciate' (castagne alla brace) col vino, ci ripagava di tutta la fatica!
L'altro giorno babbo mi ha portato qualche marrone comprato* a Gerfalco che ho preparato seguendo la famosa ricetta di nonno Renato.
*ATTENZIONE: a Gerfalco i marroni  non si possono raccogliere perché è un prodotto tipico la cui vendita è fonte quasi primaria di sostentamento per gli abitanti. Rispettate sempre il bosco, chi lo abita e chi se ne prende cura!

This is the period of chestnuts and mushrooms and my father daily leaves for Gerfalco, a tiny village on the mountain of Grosseto, in the townhall of Montieri. As a little girl, my family and me used to go there quite often: wake up at 7am, two hours of hairpin bends and a long walk through the chestnuts woods. What a scent! What a marvellous scenery and colors!...and ouch! those chestnuts husks hurt terribly: I forgot my gloves as always!Well, at least, when my grandfather then prepared his famous bruciate (hot or barbecued chestnuts) with wine, it repaid all our efforts!
The other day my father brought me some marroni (huge chestnuts) he bought* in Gerfalco which I prepared following my grandad Renato's recipe.
*PAY ATTENTION: in Gerfalco picking up marroni is not allowed as they are typical from the area and the selling is one of the main means of support for locals. Always respect the wood, its inhabitants and who takes care of it!
